Q - How do I view films with the Download Coach Movie
Manager?
A - Download Coach helps you select and download films from Independent
Choice and manage them on your computer. When you play a movie in
Download Coach, the actual viewing is done with Microsoft's Windows
Media Player 9. The download is free, but when you actually play
or preview the film for the first time, you will have to be connected
to the internet to either pay for a single viewing with PayPal or
have a movie charged to your subscription account with Virtual Highway.
Q - Why can't I download and view movies on a MAC
computer?
A - Unfortunately, the Windows Media Player for MAC does not support
the Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that Microsoft has incorporated
in it's Windows version. We use DRM to control distribution security
and keep track of billing. Without DRM, no producers would provide
us with films. We are actively researching and developing a DRM
system, with our technology partner, that will function on computers
using MAC OS X and LINUX operating systems and designing a movie
player for those systems. Microsoft may also implement DRM for the
MAC in the future. We hope to have that functionality ready by early
2005.
Q - How often can I view a film I have downloaded?
A - You can view a movie as often as you want, for 15 days from
the first time you view it (acquire a license), after that, you
will be prompted for a new login and further viewing will be charged
to your account again for another 15 days. Subscribers have 30 days
to use their monthly viewing licenses before they expire.
Q - Why does it take considerable time to downstream
a movie?
A - Our movies are DVD or HDTV quality in both
audio and video. With the current state of the Internet wiring in
North America, it takes some time to download the large files we
use to guarantee a high definition, high quality viewing experience.
An average film should take about an hour and a half to download
over a good broadband connection, but, you can start watching it
after a few minutes by using the preview function in the Download
Coach. We suggest you choose your films in the morning or some other
time when your computer is idle and schedule the download. You may
use your computer normally while films download in the background.
Then you will have the film for viewing in the evening (or anytime
for the next 15 days)
Q - Does the Download Coach only download one movie
at a time?
A - No. You can start any number of downloads simultaneously. You
can also schedule any number of films to download at specific dates
and times. The Download Coach will download movies in the order
you have scheduled them.
Q - When my computer plays a film, why does the video
appear jerky?
A - Your computer may be running out of resources, but keep in mind
that many of our classic films are taken from old prints and may
have some inherent image shake and jitter. If you have problems
playing films, try turning off background programs, e.g. msn, outlook,
etc. Make sure you have plenty of hard drive space and the hard
drive is properly defragged. Check your video card to make sure
it meets the minimum requirement. You might want to upgrade your
video card and ram if you have a lot of problems with video.
Q - Why does the movie stop playing when I am previewing
it?
A - You must download a movie to your computer to watch it. When
you preview a film you are watching the partially downloaded file.
Normally, with a good broadband connection, you may preview a film
after it is 5% downloaded and you will be able to watch the whole
film uninterruptedly. If, however, your internet connection is a
little slow at any given time, your preview may catch up with the
download and the movie will stop until more of the file is downloaded.
Using downloaded files allows us to provide you with fine quality,
high resolution video which looks great on large screen TVs or projected
in a Home Theater.
Q - Why is the audio volume low when I play a movie?
A - Your computer's audio level is controlled in three places. First
there is the physical volume control on your speakers/amplifier,
then there is the Windows Play Control software which is accessed
in the Control Panel settings. You must make sure your "Wave/DirectSc"
volume level is not muted or set too low by the Play Control. Finally
there is the volume control on the Windows Media Player. If you
have the volume all the way up on the media player and it is still
too low, you should check the other two volume controls mentioned
above.
Q - I disconnected the Download Coach before I got
the whole film. Will the download start from the beginning if I
try again?
A - No, The Download Coach will continue automatically from where
you left off (all your incomplete downloads).
Q - Can I copy the movie file I just downloaded
to another machine?
A - Yes. The movies may be freely copied from one machine to another,
BUT, the licenses you have paid for cannot be switched between computers.
If you try to view a copied version of the movie file, it will connect
to Virtual Highway via the Internet and use another of your viewing
license credits (for subscribers) or allow you to connect to PayPal
to pay for a new license.
Q - Can I view a film without being connected to
the Internet?
A - Yes. Once you have a license you may watch the film at any time
until the license expires. You can download movies to your laptop
and watch them later while traveling, for example. You can only
obtain a license for a movie while you are connected to the Internet.
